When I moved to the Gold Coast, I spent my first two weeks locked in hotel isolation in Brisbane. January storms and cyclones were ripping through, and the swell was absolutely lighting up the points down south. I’d never surfed Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, or Greenmount—I’d only ever surfed Currumbin Alley on holidays. With nothing but time, I sat there watching the surf cams over and over, completely intrigued by what it must feel like to surf those waves for the very first time. That curiosity turned into this artwork. STUPORBANK takes its name from how stupid the crazy antics at the Superbank can be—drops, run-overs, kooks, and all. I spent around 30 hours slowly chipping away at the drawing between Nintendo sessions with the kids, board games with my wife, a bit too much online shopping, and soaking up the sun from our deck in Fortitude Valley. Not long after finishing it, I reached out to White Horses just before they closed, and they ran the piece as a double-page spread—one of those full-circle moments I won’t forget. Each print is produced on 350gsm acid-free cotton rag, chosen for its texture, depth, and longevity, so the artwork is made to be lived with for years to come.
